How to prepare your car for vacation

As many of you know slow warming spring temperatures can turn quickly into summer heat blistering temperatures. As the temperatures rise so do our thoughts of vacations and weekend get-a-ways. As you make your travel plans don't forget about your car. We depend on our vehicles every day to get us to work, around town and on family vacations. Don't let your relaxing expectations quickly turn into frustration, inconvenience and extra expense.

Vehicle maintenance should be part of your vacation pre-planning. Set aside a day to bring your vehicle to Cox Dodge Chrysler Jeep in Wilson, NC to be checked out by our trained mechanics. Cox Dodge trained mechanics will go over your vehicle from bumper to bumper and will meet with you and let you know what your vehicle's needs are. Some places will try to use this as an opportunity to take advantage of you on parts and service that is not needed. At Cox Dodge we will tell you the truth about the condition of your vehicle.  We just don't want your business - we want to earn your trust!

Here are some tips you can do to help your trip be fun and vehicle worry free.

Check The Oil
Many engine problems start with the lack of oil changes. When was the last time you had your oil changed? When you pull the dipstick take a look at the oil, is it a light brown color or very dark close to being black color? If it is close to being black its time for an oil change. Also check the level, if it is below the "full" mark top the oil off with the same type of oil as you already use in the engine.

Battery
Does your car start up without dragging? Unfortunately there is no way to really tell if the battery is about to go. Check your purchase date, if the battery is older than 4 years it might need replacing. Also check the battery terminals, this a place where the battery can loose power without you ever knowing it. The terminals made need to be cleaned and tightened. If you have a battery that needs water make sure to fill it with distilled water. Water from the garden hose contains chemicals that will cut the life of your battery in half.

Automatic Transmission
The transmission is what pushes your car down the street.  To check your automatic transmission, follow your owner's manual closely. Most of them require you to park on level pavement, put the emergency brake on, put the vehicle in park. Pull the dipstick out, wipe it off and put it back into the automatic transmission holder. Wait a few seconds remove the dipstick and see where the level is. You can top it off by using the correct fluid recommended. If the fluid is a very dark brownish color you will want to consider having your transmission serviced by trained mechanics at Cox Dodge.

Engine Coolant (Antifreeze)
The very first warning is -- NEVER open a hot radiator! Check the coolant in the overflow tank. Look for the high and low markings. If the coolant is below the low mark check for leaks or have a trained mechanic at Cox Dodge to check for you. If you need to add coolant do it through the overflow tank and use the recommended coolant type for your car.

While you are under the hood
Here are some other items you can check:
Serpentine belt. Make sure the engine is stopped before checking this belt. This belt is the link that keeps               everything running together. Check it for cracks. If you see wear or cracks it is time to replace.
            Brake fluid
            Power Steering Fluid
            Windshield washer fluid
Check for anything that looks out of place.

Tires
Have you ever noticed how your vehicle rides? The tires have a lot to do with how smooth your car rides. Make sure the tire pressure is correct. The tire should have this stamped right on it. When was the last time you had your tires balanced and rotated? It could be time before you leave on your trip. Don't forget that spare tire! No one can tell when a flat will happen so be prepared.  Check the spear tire pressure and make sure you can locate and operate the jack.

Emergency Kit
You never know when something will happen so why not be prepared. A basic emergency kit is very inexpensive and most come with supplies needed to get you through any small problem.

Here are just a few helpful hints before you start out on your vacation destination
this summer!  Be safe and happy cruising.
